Welcoming the 2024 Martingale Scholars!

Yesterday, Martingale officially welcomed the second cohort of Martingale Scholars! The Scholars were joined at the Royal Society by the Martingale Team, Heads of Department from partner universities and supporters of Martingale.

Professor Dame Ann Dowling, gave a fantastic keynote speech to the Scholars. In her welcome address, Dame Ann shared advice and guidance for the Scholars, sharing how it had been 50 years since she completed her own Masters degree and how influential it had been throughout her career. She reminded the Scholars of the importance of exploring topics, widening your experiences and most importantly, following something you enjoy.

The annual Welcome Dinner marks the beginning of the Martingale Development Programme for the cohort, giving the Scholars a chance to meet each other before beginning their degrees. During the year, the cohort will have opportunities to work together, take part in training and socialise as part of the programme.

Earlier in the day, Scholars attended an induction session, along with student money management training provided by BlackBullion. The cohort will come back together in the New Year for the Masters Development Programme.

The 2024 Scholars are just beginning their Masters courses in one of our partner universities. Some of the incoming Scholars shared what they are most looking forward to about being a Martingale Scholar.

Callum, 2024 Scholar shared ‘I’m looking forward to delving into a field I’m passionate about, and I’m very excited for the coming year. I’ll be studying statistics at UCL. Martingale provides a great platform for us to pursue further studies and it has been a really supportive environment and supportive community.’

Sam, 2024 Scholar shared ‘I’m looking forward to studying a lot of particle physics. I have some quantum field theory courses this term and a standard model course next term which I’m very much looking forward to. The lecturing at Cambridge is top quality but the standard model is everything I love about physics, so I can’t wait to delve into all of that.’

Owen, 2024 Scholar shared ‘I didn’t realise how much Martingale had to offer until I started, the development that comes with the Scholarship kept me going, and made me really happy I got this specific Scholarship. I’ll be doing Part III at Cambridge, so many great minds have done it previously and so many great minds are teaching it currently, so I’m looking forward to soaking it all in.’

The whole team at Martingale wishes the 2024 cohort the best of luck with beginning the courses and we can’t wait to see where this year takes them!
