Read some of our frequently asked questions about eligibility for the 2027 Martingale Scholarship and making an application, below.
Eligibility
Can I apply if I do not qualify for Home Fee status in the UK?
We are only able to consider applications from candidates who qualify for Home Fee status at our partner universities. In addition, applicants must also have been to school in the UK or Ireland for at least three years between the ages of 11 and 18; or if not, for at least seven years between the ages of 4 and 18 in order to qualify. Those with refugee status are exempt from the school criteria but must still qualify for Home Fee status. Unfortunately, if you do not meet the above eligibility criteria, we will not be able to consider your application. If you have any questions about your specific situation, please contact us on [email protected]
What does Martingale mean by low-socioeconomic?
When identifying socioeconomic background, Martingale considers a range of indicators including household income (typically £45,000 per year or under), parental occupation, type of school attended, eligibility for Free School Meals, experience of care and refugee status.
Martingale particularly looks at the intersection between income and social class, in line with its mission to increase access to postgraduate STEM degrees to students who would not otherwise be able to afford them.
Martingale takes an intersectional approach to understanding identity and the various complex and interrelated factors which impact an individual’s likelihood of undertaking postgraduate study. Martingale understands that, in addition to financial barriers, a range of other barriers may stop someone from applying for postgraduate study. Martingale works with university and third-sector partners to address these barriers.
I have not achieved/I am not on track to achieve a 1st or 2:1 at undergraduate level.
We usually require candidates to have achieved, or be on track to achieve, at least a 2:1 at undergraduate level. In rare cases we may still consider your application if you have compelling extenuating circumstances which have affected your attainment. If this applies to you, please outline your circumstances in the relevant section of the application form.
I didn’t take out a student finance loan for religious reasons/another reason. Does this mean I am not eligible?
You are still eligible even if you have not taken out a student finance loan. We use multiple ways to assess and verify candidates’ socioeconomic circumstances, including if you have received other forms of means-tested financial support such as grants or bursaries. You will be asked to state your household income as part of your application and we may contact you for further information to confirm or clarify your circumstances.
I have already completed/I am currently completing a Masters degree, can I still apply for a Martingale Masters Scholarship?
Yes, you can still apply for a Martingale Masters Scholarship if you already have a Masters. You will be expected to explain in your application to Martingale why you would like to do a second Masters. For instance, this might be because you wish to specialise in an area which was not covered by your previous Masters.
I am in the third year of a four-year integrated Masters programme at a Martingale partner university. The fourth year of my integrated Masters is equivalent to a Martingale-funded Masters course. Am I eligible to apply?
Yes, you are eligible to apply provided that you meet our other eligibility requirements, however if you become a Martingale Qualified Candidate, we cannot guarantee that the course you are offered funding for will be the fourth year of your integrated Masters.
My previous degree was in a different subject to the Martingale-funded courses I want apply for, am I still eligible?
We strongly recommend that you look at the information about the courses that Martingale Scholars are able to take up at our partner universities. The courses are all STEM postgraduate degrees and the majority require a background in the subject or a related discipline. Each course and university is different so please visit our partner university websites or contact our partner universities to discuss entry requirements and to check if the course(s) you are interested in may be suitable for you.
Does funding cover courses beyond those listed on the website?
We are only able to fund Scholarships for the courses listed on our website.
I have previously applied for a Martingale Scholarship, can I apply again this year?
If you have applied before and were not successful or chose to withdraw your application, you are welcome to apply again. Please ensure you still meet the eligibility criteria and that you have read through all the application guidance as the process and courses are subject to change each year.
I have already independently applied for a course that Martingale funds. If I am offered a place on the course, can I still be considered for Martingale funding for this course?
Yes. Please let us know as soon as possible, particularly if you have a deadline to accept or decline shortly. If it is a Martingale-eligible course, we will consider it as if you applied after becoming a Martingale Qualified Candidate. If you are not in this situation, we strongly recommend that you wait until securing a place as a Martingale Qualified Candidate before applying to courses. This is because Martingale provides tailored application support to help make your university application(s) stronger. There is no advantage in applying to courses early, as funding offers from Martingale are not confirmed until after all applications to partner universities are submitted and offers have been decided by universities, in spring 2027.
I am interested in applying in future years, is there anything I can do at this stage?
You must be in at least the final year of undergraduate study to apply for the Martingale Masters or PhD Scholarship. If you have not yet reached this stage but are interested in applying in the future, you are welcome to look at this year’s application guidance, eligibility requirements and courses offered to get an idea of what you may be expected to answer and provide. You may want to think carefully about why you want to pursue a postgraduate degree in STEM and start researching/engaging in topics or areas that interest you. Please ensure you thoroughly check through all the application guidance in the year you are applying because the application process, questions and eligibility criteria may have changed. We recommend signing up to our newsletter here to stay up to date with Martingale and any changes to our programmes.
Application
How do I apply?
You can apply via the Martingale Website. Please see the application guidance document for further instructions on how to submit your application.
When is the Scholarship deadline?
Applications close at 23:59 on Sunday 18 October 2026.
How can I ensure I submit the best application possible?
First, ensure that you meet all of our eligibility requirements. Beyond this, we recommend that you think carefully about why you want to pursue a postgraduate degree in your chosen discipline and the topics or areas that interest you. Please keep referring to the application guidance whilst putting your application together.
Do I need to submit two academic referees or can I submit a professional referee instead?
We expect all applicants to submit two academic referees. If you will have any problems obtaining two academic referees (for example you graduated from your most recent degree more than three years ago), please email us on [email protected] to discuss.
Do my referees need to submit references before the application deadline?
No, referees will be contacted separately and will be provided with a different deadline. We strongly recommend that you keep in touch with your referees about your references. We may contact you if we are struggling to get in touch with your referee(s).
Can I change my referees after submitting my application?
We understand that some applicants may need to change their referee details after submitting their application. If this applies to you, please email us on [email protected] with the new referee details. Ensure you have spelled referees names and email addresses correctly when submitting an application.
I am applying for multiple Scholarships, do I have to submit a separate application for each Scholarship?
All applicants will only submit one ‘About Me’ section of the application, which covers questions about yourself, your educational and socioeconomic background. Applicants will then complete Scholarship-specific questions for each individual Scholarship and subject area they would like to apply for.
I have ticked the ‘Application Complete’ box in the application portal, however, I didn’t receive an email confirmation. Please can you confirm my application has been submitted.
Please see the Application Guidance document for instructions on how to submit your application. If you can see your application answers as read-only at the bottom of the portal this means that you have successfully submitted your application. For further queries, email us on [email protected].
Can I make changes to my application after submitting?
You can get in touch with us at [email protected] to request that we re-open your application. Please ensure that you do this well before the deadline so that your request can be actioned in time.
How much detail is required for the full education history section?
Please include the school/institution you studied at and the years you studied there. For example:
Primary School [name] 2008-2015
Secondary School [name] 2015-2020
Sixth Form College [name] 2020-2022
Is there any benefit to submitting an early application?
There is no benefit to submitting an early application as candidates are not shortlisted until after the application deadline, however make sure to allow sufficient time to complete and submit your application before the deadline.
If I become a Martingale Qualified Candidate, am I guaranteed a Martingale Scholarship?
Not all those who become a Martingale Qualified Candidate are able to secure a Martingale Scholarship as the pool of those who are eligible is larger than the number of Scholarships, and there is a limited number of Scholarship places at each partner university and department.
How many applicants do you normally receive, and how many receive Scholarship offers?
We are unable to share information about applicant numbers, or the proportion of applicants who receive Scholarship offers. Some data about previous application cycles can be found in our previous Impact Report here.
Why are you not offering courses in Statistics this year?
The subject areas that we offer are regularly reviewed with our partners, and the courses that we fund may change each year. Due to current partner priorities, there is a pause in Statistics Masters and PhD courses within our Mathematical Sciences Scholarships. We offer Masters and PhD Scholarships in Artificial Intelligence, and many of the courses which we fund in this area may still be of interest to you if you have a background in Statistics or Data Science.
Who can I contact if my question isn’t answered here?
