At Martingale, we believe that family income should not be a barrier to the pursuit of excellence. Our programmes focus on supporting students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Our flagship programme, the Martingale Postgraduate Scholarship, supports students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds to pursue postgraduate degrees and excel when they get there.

Founding Donor
Since 2020, XTX Markets has committed over £250mn to charities and good causes, establishing the firm as a major donor in the UK and globally. Their main priority is maths and science education and research. They aim to support more students to progress to degrees, PhDs and highly-skilled careers, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds.
XTX Markets has committed long-term funding to develop the Martingale Foundation, including core operating costs and scholarships for Masters and PhDs in the mathematical sciences. Together, we have a shared vision to build a foundation that will champion access to postgraduate degrees and will change how the sector develops talent.
Mathematical Sciences
The Mathematical Sciences Scholarship scheme, launched in 2022, is supported by XTX Markets. Alongside its core funding for Martingale Foundation, XTX Markets is supporting of over 100 Mathematical Sciences Scholars and counting.
Artificial Intelligence
The Artificial Intelligence PhD and Masters Scholarship schemes, are supported by XTX Markets. Alongside their support of mathematics, XTX Markets has expanded their support into the field of AI.
The Artificial Intelligence Scholarship scheme scheme is supported by Google DeepMind, a unit within Google focused on building AI responsibly to benefit humanity. Google DeepMind is the founding funder of the Google DeepMind AI Masters Scholarships, running since 2017 and delivered in partnership with Martingale since 2024.
Engineering
The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is the UK’s national fusion energy research organisation. UKAEA’s mission is to lead the delivery of sustainable fusion energy and maximise the scientific and economic benefit. UKAEA is supporting Martingale through the Engineering PhD Scholarships.
The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Skills And Training Underpinning a Renaissance in Nuclear (SATURN) at the University of Manchester is partnering with Martingale to support the Engineering PhD Scholarships.
Data Science in Healthcare
Alzheimer’s Research UK is the UK’s leading dementia research charity, working to revolutionise the way we treat, diagnose and prevent dementia. Alzheimer’s Research UK is supporting Martingale through the Data Science in Healthcare PhD Scholarships.
