The School of Mathematics and Statistics

The School of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Glasgow is one of the largest and most research‑active mathematical sciences departments in the UK and combines world-leading research with a welcoming and supportive postgraduate community.

In the UK’s 2021 Research Excellence Framework, 100% of the School’s research activity was judged to be either world-leading (66%) or internationally excellent (34%). According to Times Higher Education, this placed the School first in Scotland and fifth in the UK for Mathematical Sciences. The School has an international reputation for excellence in both research and teaching and is recognised for its expertise across pure mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics and data science, and for how it fosters a collaborative and outward-looking research culture.

Postgraduate students are an integral part of their research community, benefiting from close supervision, vibrant seminar programmes, student-led activities, peer support and a collegiate environment that encourages collaboration, curiosity and independence. Students also have access to a rich range of professional and personal development opportunities, including teaching and training opportunities, peer mentoring, student-led reading groups, PGR-organised seminars, research communication activities such as Science Slam and Three Minute Thesis, Mathematics Communication Training and opportunities to attend conferences and engage in international research activity.

Through their partnership with the Martingale Foundation, they look forward to supporting talented students from all backgrounds to pursue postgraduate study, contribute to world-leading mathematical and statistical research, and develop the skills, confidence and networks to thrive during their studies and beyond.
