The Maths Department
The School of Mathematics provides a range of high quality teaching and research programmes. Our graduates go on to work in a wide variety of jobs in financial services, government statistical and security services, engineering and management consultancy, IT, accountancy, teaching as well as law, community work, sports coaching, civil service and filmmaking. Many of our top graduates seek to continue studying mathematics towards a PhD both in Bristol and elsewhere.
All our academic staff are active in research, and we are one of the strongest mathematics schools in Europe in terms of research; we are proud to have been ranked 4th in the UK by Times Higher Education. In REF21, 98% of our Mathematical Sciences research was deemed either ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. We have five research institutes: Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics, Mathematical Physics, Statistical Science and Probability, Analysis and Dynamics.
We have strong links with industry and the Heilbronn Institute. These links provide many opportunities for our students, including training, internships and research projects.
