Martingale Foundation x Faculty: A Scholar Networking Event

‘There are a lot of research opportunities in this space, it is progressing really fast so you don’t know what you are going to find out today or tomorrow, as it’s expanding so quickly, and I think that’s really the beauty of the subject!’ – Alex 2024 Martingale Scholar

Martingale Scholars were thrilled to join industry professionals, machine learning engineers and data scientists for a night of networking and learning about AI research at Faculty last night.

The night consisted of lightening talks from different teams at Faculty, highlighting the world of industry research, followed by an evening of networking and conversation.

Michael, a 2024 Martingale Scholar shared ‘The event was enlightening as to what the options are when working with AI in the future, it was also reassuring to see different successful people in the industry and the career paths they had, and how my own career experience can help me reach those kind of positions too.’

Remmy, a machine learning engineer at Faculty who works to put machine learning models into production, making them useful for an end user in the real world, talked to the Scholars about how he became a machine learning engineer and the skills it took to get there. Remmy shared ‘My experience of meeting the Martingale Scholars has been a great one, the Scholars are a very bright bunch and I feel like I’m learning from the Scholars as they ask me questions.’

As part of the Martingale Development Programme, Scholars gain access to a wide array of events, training and development opportunities designed to support them to explore a wide range of career paths and options. Over 70% of PhD graduates leave academia within 3 years of completing study, with many of these graduates going on to highly successful and influential roles within industry, private and public sector. Cassandra Hugill, Chief Executive of Martingale shared ‘Scholars gained valuable insights from the Faculty event, which offered an exciting opportunity to explore research beyond academia. Engaging with the Faculty team, they learned about the diverse, winding paths that careers can take and the unexpected opportunities that arise along the way. Many thanks to the Faculty team for hosting such an inspiring event!’

Alex a 2024 Scholar shared ‘I absolutely loved today, especially the lightning talks, I really liked how we got a quick, broad explanation of what everybody does in the company. It really gave us an opportunity to think of questions and later talk to these people about what they do and delve into more detail. There are a lot of research opportunities in this space, it is progressing really fast so you don’t know what you are going to find out today or tomorrow, as it’s expanding so quickly and I think that’s really the beauty of the subject!’

Many thanks to everyone who came and participated in this event, and thank you to Faculty for hosting the Scholars!
