Quentin Tannock brings expert insight into intellectual property, technology, and academic innovation to the growing Foundation.

Martingale Foundation is pleased to welcome Quentin Tannock, Barrister at 4 Pump Court, to the Advisory Board. His appointment comes at an exciting stage of Martingale’s growth, following the recent appointment of Advisory Board Chair, Professor Kathryn Hess, Martingale is set to deepen its expertise and work toward expansion.

Quentin Tannock is a barrister at 4 Pump Court, a commercial set of Chambers in London and brings both varied and extensive experience from his career in academia, business, and venture capital. His current legal practice focuses on commercial, intellectual property, and information technology domains, with an increasing focus on data protection and AI.

Quentin worked in R&D collaborations between industry and the University of Cambridge, before going on to co-found a biotechnology spin-out at the university. This was followed by the establishment of his intellectual property consultancy and the successful sale of the data and software assets of that company. This led Quentin to his next step of pursuing a career at the Bar. After a reduced pupillage in 2015, Quentin was called to the Bar in 2016.

“Martingale’s scholars undertake research in fields with enormous commercial utility, adding impetus to their need to understand intellectual property rights and routes to commercialising University R&D. I look forward to contributing to Martingale’s mission and to the success of its scholars in these and other areas.” – Quentin Tannock

Quentin’s notable and unique experience in the development and commercialisation of academic research will be particularly valuable to the Advisory Board. Not only will his insight be valuable to Martingale, but Quentin’s experience is of direct value to current and future scholars conducting research.

“We’re delighted to welcome Quentin to the Advisory Board. Quentin’s unique perspective, spanning academia, research development, and as a barrister, could not make for a better fit. His long-standing experience in intellectual property will be invaluable, and I look forward to the insights Quentin will bring.” – Cassandra Hugill

Our Advisory Board has oversight of Martingale, guiding the development of our strategic goals and offering valuable insight on how best to achieve them. It also ensures Martingale has strong governance and that its reputation is safeguarded. Quentin’s guidance will strengthen Martingale’s readiness as it works towards becoming an independent charity.

The Advisory Board is chaired by Professor Kathryn Hess, who took up the role in October 2025. The Advisory Board members bring experience from across industry, philanthropy, the higher education sector, and working with students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds.

At a transformative moment for Martingale’s growth, we look forward to welcoming Quentin, who can contribute meaningfully to our goal of expanding access to postgraduate education.
