Orlando Gemes’ appointment strengthens Martingale’s strategic direction as it expands support for postgraduate researchers.
Martingale Foundation is pleased to welcome Orlando Gemes, Founding Partner and Chief Investment Officer at Fourier Asset Management, to the Advisory Board.
Following the recent appointment of Advisory Board Chair, Professor Kathryn Hess, the addition of Orlando advances a critical point in Martingale’s expansion as the Foundation grows. Orlando brings a wealth of financial experience, poised to support Martingale’s next chapter.
Orlando founded Fourier Asset Management in 2024. Before founding his own company, his career encompassed an impressive range of financial experience. This includes Chief Investment Officer of Fairwater Capital, Head of Structured Credit at Hermes Fund Managers, and working as a Credit Trader and Portfolio Manager. Alongside his international experience, he brings significant international relationships and global insights.
With a strong commitment to charity and social projects, Orlando has worked with Investing for Good, providing financial solutions and raising capital for charities and NGOs. Recognised as a thought-leader in the finance sector, Orlando’s personal mission to break down barriers to support students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds to achieve their potential makes him a perfect addition to the Advisory Board. Through his business, Orlando built and funded a STEM PhD programme that has employed over 15 PhDs as interns, with two going on to receive full-time positions. Alongside this, Orlando has campaigned for the Maryam Mirzakhani Scholarship in mathematics and volunteered with Sponsors for Educational Opportunity, preparing underrepresented students for career success.
“The Martingale Foundation plays a vital role by providing financial support and mentorship to exceptional STEM undergraduates from low-income backgrounds, enabling them to pursue advanced degrees at leading UK universities. Supporting cognitive diversity and talent, regardless of background, isn’t just important—it’s essential for innovation and societal progress.” – Orlando Gemes
“We’re delighted to welcome Orlando to the Advisory Board. His insight and expertise will be invaluable as we shape Martingale’s next phase of growth. From our first meeting, it was clear how closely aligned he is with our mission. I’m very much looking forward to working with him as we chart Martingale’s future.” – Cassandra Hugill
The Advisory Board has oversight of Martingale, guiding the development of our strategic goals and offering valuable insight on how best to achieve them. It also ensures Martingale has strong governance and that its reputation is safeguarded.
As Martingale prepares to spin out into an independent charity, Orlando will play a pivotal role in ensuring the Foundation’s long-term sustainability and prosperity.
Orlando will join other Advisory Board members who have a range of experience across industry, philanthropy, the higher education sector, and working with students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. The Advisory Board is chaired by Professor Kathryn Hess, who was appointed in October 2025.
At a transformative moment for Martingale’s growth, we look forward to welcoming Orlando who will contribute meaningfully to our goal of expanding access to postgraduate education.
